Abstract

The “Electricity for all” programme aims to ensure access to electricity in emerging and developing countries. This ambitious initiative is centred on performing sustainable electrification actions, so we take advantage of our technical, logistical, organisational and financial capacity.

Project Description

Today, there are calculated to be over 1 billion people with no access to essential power services, which negatively influences their quality of life and opportunities for development. With the “Electricity for all” programme, we are responding to the call made by the international community to bring universal access to modern forms of power, with provision models that are environmentally sustainable, economically viable and socially inclusive. The “Electricity for all” programme aims to ensure access to electricity in emerging and developing countries. This ambitious initiative is centred on performing sustainable electrification actions, so we take advantage of our technical, logistical, organisational and financial capacity. In addition, all the initiatives undertaken by different areas of the company are coordinated. Apart from the investment through venture capital, the activities of the distribution companies in Brazil, Iberdrola Foundation, In Iberdrola Engineering or Corporate Volunteering is also included. It is our challenge and main goal to bring the year 2020 electricity to 4,000,000 people with access to this source of energy in emerging and developing countries.

Results

From the launch of the “Electricity for all” programme in January 2014 to the first quarter of 2015, we have contributed to over 800,000 people benefiting from access to electricity through projects carried out in different countries in Latin America and Africa. By the year 2020, we hope to reach 4,000,000 beneficiaries.

Business Model

“Electricity for All” is focused on investing in innovative companies dedicated to universal electrification: sustainable electrification actions with the technical, logistical, organizational and financial capacity of IBERDROLA. There are three lines of action: Financing projects through investment in capital. Activities carried out by the businesses in the countries where IBERDROLA has a presence. Development of projects with a high social component, through NGOs and corporate volunteering.

Lessons Learnt

The Chair for the Globalisation of Basic Power Services, at the Centre for Innovation in Technologies for Human Development, of the Technical University of Madrid (itdUPM), is a strategic tool for the development of the“Electricity for all” programme. Through this chair, IB and the itdUPM work to carry out activities for training, dissemination and identification of R+D+i actions that give rise to innovative projects in the field of making power services universal.

Key Feature

-SunFunder: Through PERSEO has invested in the company SunFunder to finance off-grid solar projects. -Chair UPM: IBERDROLA and the Polytechnic University of Madrid, have created the Department for the universalization of basic energy services. -Alliance to find energy solutions in humanitarian crises. -Light for All: Proposal directed to rural electrification. -IBERDROLA Member of GSEP. -Ecovillage Nyumbani: IBERDROLA worked with Energía sin Fronteras Foundation in building a solar farm in the Kenyan village to provide electricity Nyumbani orphans. -Benin Project: It has been installed infrastructure for the electricity supply of an educational-health complex promoted by Fundebe. -Corporate Volunteering: We have over 30 volunteers discharged from the specific issue of universalization of energy services. -Rwanda: Project for electrification of schools mainly with photovoltaics and create micro-networks. -Peru: Electrification Project school and clinic in Talavera de la Reyna (Peru).

Other significant information

It is our challenge and main goal to bring by the year 2020 electricity to 4,000,000 people without access to this source of energy in emerging and developing countries. Search of projects under development where IBERDROLA can take a participation through a minor stake using PERSEO Investment Fund.
