FSR-Global - World Energy Transition outside the West

Is there an energy transition outside the West? This paper answers the question pragmatically. Rather than starting from pledges, targets and commitments, it measures what ten non-Western countries have actually built over the decade 2013–2024: new sources of primary energy, the manufacturing and adoption of the equipment that turns those sources into useful energy and give consumption its electricity consuming devices, plus the mining and refining of the minerals that this equipment requires. The ten countries are China, India and Indonesia in Asia; South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya in Africa; Saudi Arabia; and Brazil, Chile and Türkiye. Together they hold roughly half of the world’s population.
