SEforALL Energy Compacts Workshop: 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy as the Path to Net-Zero

19.08.2021

Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) in cooperation with Google and UN-Energy is hosting a workshop called "24/7 Carbon-Free Energy as the Path to Net-Zero", on Tuesday 24 August at 11:00 EST.

Electricity sector decarbonization is essential to attain a net-zero future. Electricity accounts for approximately 25% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and is key to decarbonizing other sectors of the economy, including buildings, transport, and industry. To achieve net-zero emissions across the economy by 2050, electricity must be decarbonized even faster, while becoming the core of the energy system.

Complete electricity decarbonization means that every kilowatt-hour of electricity demand is served by carbon-free electricity sources, every hour of every day, everywhere. Consumers of electricity - from companies to cities to governments across the world - can accelerate the creation of decarbonized electricity systems by joining the Global Coalition for 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) and working to fully decarbonize their own electricity consumption. Energy consumers and policymakers can work together to drive the clean energy transition by committing to higher-impact procurement approaches and developing the supportive policy and regulatory frameworks that are critical to enable them.

As part of the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy 2021 (HLDE), Google and Sustainable Energy for All will facilitate a workshop where stakeholders will learn about the principles behind 24/7 CFE and how they can help accelerate the decarbonization of electricity systems through their own actions, starting with registering an Energy Compact. Participants will also be invited to join the growing Global Coalition for 24/7 CFE. In particular, the workshop will:

  1. Provide an overview of 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy principles , how 24/7 CFE can accelerate electricity grid decarbonization, and its relevance to net-zero goals.
  2. Inform participants of existing efforts underway to enable all energy consumers to participate in 24/7 CFE purchasing, and what policymakers can do to strengthen these efforts.
  3. Provide an overview of Energy Compacts and specific examples for advancing progress toward 24/7 CFE and SDG7.

Stakeholders are also encouraged to register their own Energy Compacts, committing to the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy principles and outlining their own actions towards 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy.
