Approximately one billion people today rely on health facilities without a reliable electricity supply. While most large hospitals enjoy round-the-clock power access, rural clinics face significantly lower electrification rates. Without dependable power, many essential life-saving interventions cannot be performed safely or effectively. Renewable energy is at the forefront of addressing this critical issue. Decentralized renewable energy solutions offer a cost-effective, rapidly deployable, and reliable option to electrify healthcare centers, transforming lives and bolstering global efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.
Through the Empowering Lives and Livelihoods initiative, IRENA supports countries in assessing the energy needs of their health infrastructure, providing tailored technical designs for each facility type, estimating costs, and offering financial solutions. Emphasis is also placed on suitable delivery models for accelerating health center electrification, including institutional frameworks and implementation approaches.
This webinar will present key findings from IRENA’s healthcare assessment reports for Burkina Faso, Sao Tome and Principe, and Mozambique.
