Heat Maps: Progress and Challenges on Sustainable Energy

04.09.2017

Achieving universal energy access for billions of people who lack these services is an enormous challenge that can be hard to navigate when deploying limited resources for maximum impact. That’s why SEforALL has created the ‘heat maps.’

There is a lot of data available today, such as the Global Tracking Framework (GTF), Regulatory Indicators for Sustainable Energy (RISE), and these have helped SEforALL create four sets of ‘heat maps,’ (clean cooking, electrification, energy efficiency, renewable energy) which identify specific countries and regions with the biggest gaps and needs on key sustainable energy topics.

By combining and analyzing data sets like these, it is possible to show leaders where they can make the biggest and fastest inroads towards the SDG7 goals. These maps also show where progress is happening so that others can replicate the success and help leaders in government, business and civil society make smart choices. The ‘heat maps’ should be thought of as living documents that are updated regularly as new information becomes available.
