Sub-Saharan Africa stands out as the region of the world where access to modern energy (both electricity and to clean cooking solutions) is most lacking, together with large areas in South East Asia.

Africa as a whole is a land of contradictions, with huge energy resources and an energy sector that is not yet able to support development and to meet the needs and aspirations of its citizens.

The International Energy Agency has recently published an Africa Energy Outlook which contains a deep analysis of this contradictory condition and advances alternative scenarios and suggestions.

The workshop is a presentation of this Outlook in its parts relating to the issue of access to modern energy, and a debate of scholars, policy makers and cooperation practitioners on the same theme.

After the workshop the award ceremony of the WAME Call for Case studies will award the best projects implemented and targeted at extending access to modern energy
